Pussy Galore Bond Girl Dies
ONE of the most iconic of the many Bond Girls, British actor Honor Blackman, has died at the age of 94. Although best known globally for her role as Pussy Galore in the 1954 James Bond film Goldfinger alongside Sean Connery she built a huge body of work before and after that. The British public would already have known her as Cathy Gale in the early 1960s “Avengers” TV series, an all action modern female role which brought her to the Bond production team’s attention. She appeared regularly on stage and TV, playing a well loved role in the 1990s sitcom The Upper Hand, showing the range she had. She also appeared in musicals, Shakespeare and even one man shows, performing monologues about her life on and off the stage and screen.
Bond producer Michael G Wilson said she was “a film icon … who shall forever be remembered as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. An extraordinary talent and a beloved member of the Bond family. Our thoughts are with her family at this time.” Ms Blackman was also a committed activistand a vocal supporter of the Liberal Party who often appeared on stage at their rallies. She was also proficient in the martial arts, something which led to feisty roles such as those in The Avengers and Bond at a time when on-screen females were usually playing bit parts as love interests for leading men.
