Pochettino off to Madrid in the summer?
THERE has been increased speculation in the Spanish media that former Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino could be taking over at Real Madrid in the summer, still arguably the world’s largest club. The Spanish giants are currently second behind Barcelona in La Liga and many feel that only winning the title this season will be enough to keep Zinedine Zidane in the manager’s role. Sportswriter Marcelo Gonzalez has unearthed a 2019 interview Pochettino gave with El Pais saying that managing Real would be his dream job, although at that time dismissal seemed a long way off as Tottenham were in the midst of a Champions League run that saw them reach the final, paired with good domestic form.
Worryingly for Spurs fans he also said that his choice of striker would be Harry Kane, with the Madrid club being one of few with deep enough pockets to prise Kane away from the faltering north Londoners. Gonzalez said that it is an opens secret that the Argentine has been in talks with delegations from Real Madrid since they lost to Manchester City in the last 16 of the Champions League and that he turned down a move to Barcelona hoping the Bernabeu position would become vacant.
