Beckham’s American dream takes off at last
SIX years after announcing he would be setting up a new Major League Soccer (MLS) club franchise, David Beckham’s Inter Miami finally played their first game at the weekend. Inability to find a suitable stadium has been the main sticking point along with financing problems, while even now the new team lack a permanent home. Wife Victoria and chef Gordon Ramsay were among the celebrity friends and family attending the inaugural match against the experienced Los Angeles FC. Sadly, there was no dream start for Becks and his boys, losing a creditable 1-0 against LAFC. British fans who grumble about the travelling time involved may want to spare a thought for the 300 or so hardy souls who made the journey to Los Angeles from Miami – a 4,000 mile round trip.
