Scammer posed as copper
THE authorities have reminded people to be careful about giving out personal details after a conman in Benidorm emptied an elderly couple’s bank account after posing as a police officer. National Police believe that the perpetrator had been monitoring the couple and he stopped them as they were entering their home, showing them his fake police ID badge. He explained that he was investigating a series of local robberies and asked to enter their house to check nothing had been stolen or there was no sign of a break-in. While in there he took their bank card and also managed to obtain the access code from the couple. The couple later called the authorities after their account had been emptied.
The National Police this week arrested a man and charged him with the theft and other similar scams in Benidorm. They reminded the public to never give out personal information such as bank account or credit card numbers, never allow people into your home unless you are sure who they are. Common disguises for conmen to gain entry into a property include utility workers (gas, water, telephone etc) and charity workers.
