Mexican wave for Watson
BRITAIN’S number 2 tennis player, Heather Watson, leapt into the world Top 50 after a hard fought victory in the Mexican Open on Sunday. She was playing teenage rising star Leylah Fernandez (Canada) and finally won in the third set after failing to take nine previous match points. Five of those were in the second set which she eventually lost 8-10 on the tiebreak. Despite missing further championship points in the last set, Ms Watson ran out a reasonably comfortable 6-1 winner as her 17-year-old opponent wilted slightly under the pressure. In the men’s event Spaniard Rafa Nadal won the event for the third time, beating American Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-2 in a tournament where he didn’t lose a single set. Fritz was generous in defeat saying “he's one of the best players to ever play the game and he showed me why that is tonight."
