Stone Age to Space Age

THIS Thursday’s presentation for the Arts Society Marina Alta is by Dr Lars Tharp whose “Beyond earth: From Stone Age to Space Age” will be the subject. This is described as a lecture on man’s affinity with and dependence on clay, from early building materials to wine urns and the ceramic insulation without which electricity could not have been developed. Dr Tharp is a well known media expert and...

Oranges with “apeel”

THERE is no shortage of oranges in this part of the world; they are an important part of the local diet and many expatriates consume far more of them than they ever did in their home countries. But in this age of “no waste” what can you do with the peel, other than compost it? For starters, candied orange peel is a great decoration for cakes with a real sweet and sour flavour. Take the well cleaned...

Ladies lap of honour

ONDARA is hosting the eighth and final stage of the Volta la Marina cycle road race on 8 March and, as this also coincides with International Women’s Day, there will be a special “lap of honour” around the town beforehand. This will start at 9.45am at Plaza de Toros and feature all the females who participated in any or all of the eight leg event which started back in early December in Parcent. The...

Crushed to death

THE Guardia Civil have confirmed that a 70-year-old man died in Teulada over the weekend after being crushed by a car. The tragedy happened at Saturday lunchtime on Cami de les Comes when the vehicle appears to have rolled down an embankment after being parked up. Two ambulances attended the scene, but the pensioner could not be revived, said the Guardia statement. An investigation is underway as to why...

Driven to distraction

THE municipal car pound in Calpe is currently full and the Local Police union have said that the system is close to collapse. Abandoned or badly parked vehicles are towed to the pound for collection (after payment of a fine) by their owners. If they aren’t claimed, then the cars are supposed to be auctioned off to help fund the system and to clear space for new arrivals. However, these auctions have not...

Time to change your exchange habits?

IT’S fairly common knowledge among everyone but the most inexperienced travellers that buying your holiday money at the airport is not a sound financial move. However, a recent survey by the “Daily Mail” showed that there is a surprising difference even within the same firm. On 14 February they changed £500 at a number of UK airports where currency giant Moneycorp had bureau de change stalls and...

Scorcher for Carnival

THE region enjoyed some of the best weather in living memory to coincide with this year’s Carnestoltes (carnival) celebrations. In the capital of the Marina Alta, Denia, about 2,000 people attended the Oriental themed event, with the story of Disney’s Mulan being re-enacted in Plaza Valgamedios for all the family. There was also a ballet performance, Chinese New Year dragon and much more as the...

CICU, the emergency services co-ordination centre, released the details on Friday, saying that two medical crews and a helicopter attended the remote scene of the accident. CPR was performed but the team were unable to get any response and his death was confirmed at the scene. An investigation into the...

The Carnival is coming!

IN common with many towns, villages and cities across Spain, Calpe will be celebrating “Carnaval” this weekend. The main location is Plaza Mayor and the outdoor bar service opens at midday where well-priced drinks will be available for all. From 1 pm local band Xaranga Bataclan will be playing and at 5 pm is the highlight for many, the children’s parade. From 7 pm there is a DJ playing a set and at...

Serial complainer

AFTER analysing their customer complaints to find out why they had taken a dramatic leap, Valencia’s Municipal Transport Company (EMT) found that 590 out of a total of 736 had been made by the same person. EMT had been criticised by politicians for their 350% jump in complaints but these have now been adjusted down to the “real” figure of 146, actually a fall of 23.5% from 2018. The complainant in...
