FOUR fishing eagles (ospreys) have been introduced into the Pego-Oliva marshes this week, part of the longer term project of reintroducing the birdsJointly promoted by the town halls of Denia, Javea, Pego and Oliva along with the Montgo Natural Park board, the aim is eventually to restrore the species across the wider region. Two of the fledgling eagles were born in the Balearic Islands and the other two in Cadiz with Andalucia and the Balearics being the only place in Spain they currently live in the wild. Initially, the chicks are being housed in special cages and will be fed without seeing their keepers in order for them to gain independence from humans. The cages will be opened when the birds are ready to start flying and hopefully they will settle safely into the marshes which are an ideal environment for them. Man-made hazards such as power lines and pylons have been removed from the area to protect both the newest residents and the existing bird population. By Simon Russell
