Saving the Castell

JAVEA’S Culture Department has opened a study into the much-needed rehabilitation works on the town’s Castell de la Granadella. Originally thought to be built as a fort or lookout post sometime around the 14th century it has sustained damage both from nature and man over the centuries, including being used as mine during the Napoleonic wars. The Castell received BIC protected status back in 1996 and is the only structure of its kind on the Javea coastline.

Some renovation work was carried out on it 15 years ago but the town hall have been warned that action needs to be taken urgently to prevent irreversible erosion. Councillor Quiro Moragues has said that the first stage is to pay a small amount for a contract to determine the full extent of the work required. They will also start investigating whether subsidies are available.
