Leggy new arrivals at Terra Natura Benidorm

terranatura
THE Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park has two elegant new arrivals, a pair of male and female Japanese cranes (Grus japonensis). The rare birds have been sent from the Lourosa ornithological park in Portugal and it is hoped that the pair, both born in 2018, will breed in their new surroundings. The cranes are iconic creatures to the Japanese people and their flag was said to have been inspired by the bird’s plumage. However, they are in danger of extinction and can now mainly be found in the wild only in more remote parts of China and Mongolia. Unusually among birds the cranes mate for life and if one of the pair die, they rarely find another mate. They will be housed in the main bird area alongside pelicans, swans, ducks and other species.
