Four decades of democracy

JAVEA Mayor Jose Chulvi this week gave an impassioned speech to commemorate 40 years of democracy at a local level, marked by the elections later this month. He said that in Javea like many towns the four decades of democratically elected councils since the death of General Franco saw “equality among neighbours, open doors and selflessness for the common good”.  He also said we should not take democracy for granted although many voters will have known nothing else. He alluded to the rise across the free world of populism and the potential threats to freedom that came with it. “Democracy should not be seen as something solid and timeless like the Montgo” he said, alluding to the town’s most famous landmark.
