LAST Friday was Javea’s Calvary celebrations when the image of Jesus of Nazareth is returned to its home in the hermitage for another year. For the first time in its 252 years, this time a woman was one of the carriers, a local Javea resident called Chus. Unlike some of the drawn out debates about whether woman should be taking part in traditionally male pursuits, Chus simply asked if she could join in when the image passed by her street. Last Friday was a bank holiday in the town and the weather also played along after the Easter washout, meaning there were plenty around for the fireworks display that closed the event for another year.
