Denia-Pego marsh clean-up on hold

IN a situation being repeated up and down Spain, many of the scheduled clean-ups of environmentally sensitive areas have been put on hold or stopped altogether as the health crisis has eaten up spare public resource. A prime example is the Denia-Pego Marjal (marshes) in the Costa Blanca North where a major clean-up was carried out after the 1 March Bajada del Bullent flat bottomed boat carnival. People congregate with their home made often flimsy boats as well as food, drink, tyres and inflatable devices. At least three of the boats have now sunk along with other detritus and inevitably will begin to contaminate the pristine waters which are homes to rare flora and fauna and even recently reintroduced ospreys. Usually such rubbish would have been collected then recycled or destroyed within a few days. CAPTION Work starts on the Bajada del Bullent clean-up just prior to the lockdown.
