Asterix creator passes away
ALBERT Uderzo, cartoonist and creator of the iconic Asterix the Gaul character has died at his home in France aged 92. Mr Uderzo met writer Rene Gosciny in 1951 and they drew on their combined drawing and writing skills to create Asterix and his band of Gaulish warriors, a sort of Robin Hood character for France and mainland Europe. When Gosciny died in 1977 Uderzo also took over the writing duties until his retirement in 2011 after over half a century of output. To judge the esteem the character is now held in, an early comic was auctioned two years ago in Paris and sold for 1.4 million euros. Uderzo was born in Italy but spent most of his life in France. His family said he had been battling with his health since a recent heart attack
