SAN JAVIER mayor José Miguel Luengo has repeated a call to replace the Canal El Estacio bridge linking the Mar Menor to La Manga, with a tunnel.
The El Estacio bridge is a bascule-designed structure, exactly the same as London´s iconic Tower Bridge, and besides the frequent delays when both sides are lifted up and down, the mechanism has been prone to regular breakdowns causing added frustration to road users and maritime traffic.
Murcia president Fernando López Miras has now backed Miguel Luengo´s call and asked San Javier council to produce some plans to replace the bridge, which was opened 16 years ago at a cost of nine million euros.
