Tackling marine plastic problem

UNIVERSITY students from Barcelona and Valencia gathered together in Denia last week to launch their participation in a new Europe wide project aimed at tacking the issue of plastic waste in the Mediterranean Sea.  The Medsealitter project brings together the students, who are studying biodiversity and biology, with fishermen’s associations, marine users and NGOs to study the problem and produce ideas. The project is being piloted in Italy, France and Greece as well as Spain. A spokeswoman for the Denia team said “What this protocol seeks is to reach common legislation to address the problem and come to strategic agreements on space-time observation, waste measurement and control of the impact on marine fauna”.
