THE much needed second elderly residents home in Denia may be tendered out to a private company, although not all politicians agree with the proposal. There is a long waiting list for the existing centre in a town that has one of the most ageing populations in the region. There has been a formal proposal from a private business to make the necessary 8 million euro investment to build the new home, in exchange for a 40 year concession to manage the centre.
This is under consideration by the governing council but the Podemos opposition are strongly against the idea saying “Matters such as healthcare and the elderly should never be in the hands of the private sector.” Supporters say that without the help of private funding the second home may not be built for several years.
