JAVEA’S Pinosol Park is a strictly no smoking area and not just for some obscure jobs-worth reason but because the area constitutes a major fire hazard. The park was almost completely destroyed in the forest fires of 2016, but the cleaning crew who work there can testify that people continue to ignore the smoking ban as they collected over 2,000 cigarette butts on their last visit. The area is cleaned by the contractors every two months and they said the time allocated means they didn’t even have time to collect all the butts - one of the primary man-made causes of forest fires along with arson and barbecues. Services Councillor Kika Mata said that people had a short memory and many smokers continue to ignore the risks despite signs making it clear that their actions are prohibited.
