Celebrating a nautical heritage

Denia´s long awaited Museum of the Sea opened its doors to the public last Friday at its site in the historic old fish market.
25 years in the planning and after several false starts, the museum was officially inaugurated in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries and members of the public. Architect Josep Antoni Gisbert thanked the local people whose donations make up much of the items on display. He said the museum was a celebration of Denia’s age old links with the sea through navigation, trade, fishing and most recently tourism. Fittingly the building overlooks the Mediterranean next to the port, and the opening brings a new lease of life to an historic but neglected building in the capital of the Marina Alta.   By Simon Russell
