Home Insurance

It is estimated that over 40% of homes in Spain are not insured but, having worked so hard to buy your dream home in the Costa Blanca, you are not about to make that mistake.

So, what are the key factors for you when choosing the insurer and policy?  Maybe this list will resonate?

  • I want to deal with someone who knows what they are talking about
  • I want to deal with people who are easy to contact
  • I want to be able to read the policy and understand what is covered and what isn’t
  • I want to be able to deal with my broker in English
  • I want to pay a fair premium
  • If I make a claim for something that is covered under my policy; the claim will be paid

Having ticked off all those questions we can get down to the specific requirements you have and tailor the cover you need.  Insuring buildings, contents, providing worldwide cover on portable personal possessions and then ensuring that high value items such as jewellery, works of art and antiques are adequately covered.

Travel Insurance

When you’ve booked your holiday and are busy preparing to make memories to last a lifetime, the possibility of what could go wrong is often the last thing on your mind. However, as thousands of people every year find out, it pays to be prepared for the possibility of things like lost baggage, travel delays, cancellations and above all medical emergencies.  The most expensive claims that a travel insurer faces are almost always for medical expenses and every year there are claims settled in excess of €100,000.  No-one wants to think about the possibility of getting injured or falling ill whilst on holiday but with eye watering figures like that it pays to take out good cover.

Top tips

  • Buy your policy as soon as you book a trip so you are covered against cancellation.
  • Declare all medical conditions.
  • Note the emergency contact number and carry it with you.
  • Tell an insurer if you are taking a cruise — not doing so could invalidate your cover.
  • Ensure you have correct vaccinations for exotic destinations.
  • Carry your EHIC when travelling in the EU.
  • Provide correct travel dates on single-trip policies.
  • Don’t take part in any hazardous sports unless they are specified in the cover.
  • Read the policy and understand the cover you have.

Health Insurance

When it comes to choosing the right private health insurance, more often than not we are overwhelmed by the number of companies, products and options available. It can often become confusing and this can lead to us putting off taking out an insurance policy until it is too late.

Below are some of the main factors to take into account and why it is best to approach a leading broker like Ibex who can look at your needs and recommend the right policy for you from the wide range of insurers that we work with.

  • Do I need an insurance policy for cover just in my country of residence, the rest of Europe or Worldwide?
  • Will I be able to use any doctor or hospital or will I have to use a network?
  • Does the insurer have a network of doctors & hospitals in my area?
  • Will my pre-existing conditions be covered?
  • Will there be a waiting period before I can claim?
  • Do I need a policy for hospital only treatment or do I want one that covers outpatient (doctor consultations, tests or scans) as well?
  • What is the excess (co payment) and how does it work?
  • What is my budget?

Car Insurance

In the event of an accident, you should switch on your hazard warning lights, put on your high visibility jacket and place emergency triangles at a distance of 50 metres and 100 metres behind the car.

If there is any injury or if the road is blocked because either or both of the vehicles cannot be moved you MUST call the emergency number 112. If someone is seriously injured do not try to move them, unless they are in danger. Help keep them safe, calm & warm and wait for the emergency services.

If the Police are called you must not move your vehicle even if the road is blocked as they will need to see the incident in situ to properly prepare their report. The Police report will not apportion blame but simply quote what each driver has said and provide a sketch of the road and the incident.

If there is no injury, and it is clear who is at fault, the vehicles can be moved and you do not need to call the Police. Ideally. take photographs of the incident and look for any witnesses before any vehicle is moved. In all cases you must complete a European Accident Statement with the other driver. Both drivers have to sign it for their respective insurers as this is the basis upon which a claim will be handled.
